TORONTO (Apr. 10) – Yes, indeed, disillusioned followers of the Toronto Maple Leafs: The sun did come up on Hump Day this week, roughly nine hours after the fat lady sang her last note in Tampa. In fact, it was a gorgeous Wednesday here in the Big Smoke – with crystal-clear sky and light-jacket temperature.
Too bad the Houston Astros were in town.
My God, no hockey fan in this area would blurt out three syllables of commiseration before being told to “shut up!” by a baseball fan in Space City USA. You will see better clubs than the Astros at Christie Pits this summer. But, that’s what the schedule-maker laid on us folk Wednesday night. My Rogers Centre ticket said “Apr. 9,” so down to the ball-yard I went with my daughter Lauren and – of course – my trusty Nikon.
As you’ll see, there was lots of blue above the city, and in the stadium:
IT REQUIRED MORE THAN A FEW STEPS ON THE RAMP OF SEC. 527 TO REALIZE WE WEREN’T ALONE AT ROGERS CENTRE. AT FIRST, ALL WE SAW WERE EMPTY SEATS.
BEFORE WE ENTERED THE EGLINTON SUBWAY STATION, AN AIR CANADA BOEING-767 SOARED OVER MID-TOWN TORONTO ON ITS LANDING APPROACH TO PEARSON AIRPORT.
FOR SEVERAL YEARS, IT HAS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO WALK BETWEEN UNION STATION AND ROGERS CENTRE IN FULL DAYLIGHT. THE CONDOMINIUM TOWERS THAT LITTER OUR WATER-FRONT CAST LONG SHADOWS LATE IN THE DAY:
THE OFFICE TOWERS OF BAY ST. – CANADA’S FINANCIAL HUB.
FROM BENEATH THE 1,815-FOOT C.N. TOWER: TALLEST FREE-STANDING STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD BETWEEN 1975 AND 2010. IT SITS ADJACENT TO THE BALLPARK (BELOW).
ANNOUNCED ATTENDANCE FOR THE 7-3 BLUE JAYS ROMP OVER HOUSTON WAS 13,569 BUT THEY MAY HAVE BEEN COUNTING ARMS AND LEGS.
TORONTO STARTER BRENDAN MORROW ?? IN PITCH SEQUENCE.
I SUSPECT NO ONE MESSES WITH THIS COP.
MY DAUGHTER LAUREN (RIGHT) AND HER FRIEND MADISON. WE WERE IN THE FIRST ROW OF THE UPPER DECK, AS EVIDENCED BY LAUREN’S POOR MANNERS.
ASTROS MANAGER BO PORTER MAKES A PITCHING CHANGE ? WHILE BLUE JAYS SHORTSTOP MAICER IZTURIS – ON SECOND BASE – CATCHES UP WITH FRIENDS.?
BLUE JAYS MANAGER JOHN GIBBONS MAKES THE LONG WALK FROM DUGOUT TO UMPIRE HUNTER WENDELSTEDT WHILE CONTEMPLATING A VIDEO-REVIEW CHALLENGE OF RYAN GOINS BEING PICKED OFF FIRST BASE. GIBBY CHOSE NOT TO BOTHER.
ASTROS RELIEVER JEROME WILLIAMS DEALS TO EDWIN ENCARNACION ? WITH FIELD-LEVEL FANS AND TV CAMERAS ? IN FULL FOCUS.
AFTER THE BALL GAME…
ILLUMINATED C.N. TOWER SOARS OVER ROGERS CENTRE.
METRO TORONTO CONVENTION CENTRE, WITH BAY ST. TOWERS IN BACKGROUND.
