SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Dec. 9) — As the old saying goes: Life’s a beach, but someone has to live it. So, why not me?
And, why not in beautiful southern California?
After a wonderful weekend with my ex–wife Susan’s family in Laguna Hills and Mission Viejo (both part of Orange County), I drove up to Santa Monica Beach with my daughter Lauren on Sunday afternoon. We stayed for two nights at the original Hotel California — a 1948 creation that served as inspiration for the 1977 album and smash hit by The Eagles. Merely two blocks from the famed Santa Monica Pier, it was a perfect location to enjoy the ocean shore, a bit of shopping (impossible to avoid with my 15–year–old daughter) and a pair of phenomenal Pacific sunsets.
Escaping Leaf Land for five days was truly a joy. As such, there is a singular absence of hockey in this photo–blog. Rather, you will see what Lauren and I saw in two spectacular weather days here in SoCal… courtesy, as always, of my trusty NIKON. Come along and enjoy.

PACIFIC SUNSET — DEC. 7, 2014
There was some disappointment on the drive north from Orange County on Sunday as high cirrus cloud over the entire Los Angeles region threatened to obscure the setting sun. Instead, the upper–level haze generated a remarkable array of color — first a typically golden warmth as the sun dipped beneath the Pacific horizon; then a brilliant and deep reddish hue reflecting off the cirrus layer. More than a hundred people lined the Santa Monica shore with cameras mounted on tripods.
I held mine aloft and the sight was dazzling.

PACIFIC SUNSET — DEC. 8, 2014
There was nothing to obscure the brilliance of an orange and gold sunset over the Pacific on Monday at roughly 4:50 p.m. — though high cloud over the ocean south of here created a nifty reflection.
