Fun With Vintage NHL Jerseys

I DEDICATE THIS BLOG TO THE GURU–MASTER OF NHL EXPANSION, SCOTTY BOWMAN.

TORONTO (Dec. 19) — With my son, Shane, in town from Guelph for the Christmas break, I started shuffling through my closet of vintage National Hockey League jerseys over the weekend. We began playing a game of “how it looked” by pairing uniforms as they would have appeared during NHL encounters in the 1960’s and 70’s. And, thought I to myself, what a fun, innocuous photo–blog it would make.

For example, a game at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1967–68 between the expansion Pittsburgh Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs would have featured these old–time duds:

I have roughly 40 vintage jerseys in my collection — assembled since 1979, when I bought a Colorado Rockies home–white uniform at Doug Laurie’s Sporting Goods in Maple Leaf Gardens. Back then, it was the only place you could find (and order) these items. As the third (or alternate)–jersey craze began to fester in the mid–90’s, and with the advent of Internet websites dedicated to such apparel, virtually all former NHL designs are available today (with the lone and puzzling exception of the 1976 to 1978 Cleveland Barons; if someone could explain why, yours truly would be grateful). As mentioned, most of my jerseys hang in a closet (as below) in my midtown–Toronto apartment. I have others — woolen–sweater replicas — that are put away in a plastic garbage–bag somewhere downstairs. One of these days, I’ll bust them out as well.

So, on a quiet pre–holiday Monday, I put together these jersey pairings, with the NHL season in which they would have been worn. Sometimes, a man has to go back to being a boy for a few moments:

  1. I have always liked the old Buffalo Sabers logo with the swords and Minnesota North Stars logos, must be the colours I guess.

  2. The only little slip-up here is 1973-74 California at Buffalo, and the captain’s ‘C’ on Gil Perreault’s #11 jersey. Perreault wasn’t named Sabres captain until the early 1980s. Buffalo’s captain in 1973-74 was #15 Gerry Meehan. But what a fantastic collection, with the exception of the mid-1990s NY Islanders Capt. Highliner atrocity!

  3. I have a Lanny MacDonald Rockies jersey. Also from Doug Lauries and an original NJ Devils Chico Resch also from Dougs.
